gardening, can you dig it

I've dirt under my fingernails and am in bad need of a pedicure.

In other words everything is bliss.

I'm playing in the dirt which is my favourite place to play.

When I started doing big girl things like paying a mortgage I found I had fallen in love with gardening. It was quite unexpected, given my fear of spiders and disdain of Crocs but it is what it is.

And when we moved from our first house to our new build almost two years ago I thought my heart would break from having to leave my gardens, we had grown up together you see.

But my heart has healed and I'm ready to love another.

  1. Plant and nurture something for me please, for though I like to play in the dirt, I am hopeless in the garden. And give us pictures of what you grow!

P.S. I fixed that oversight on my post for you : )

  2. I am a bit envious of your garden. We have room for a small garden but I am afraid to plant anything in case I kill it all!

  3. We only have a small herb garden but we love it.

  4. Envy your love of the dirt. I prefer the forewoman approach. I buy the veg/flowers and then point to random spots in the soil while DH plants them. Sure, I have to put out afterwards but I prefer a messy marital bed to a messy nailbed. *wink*

  5. I like playing in the dirt too, but I'm a gardening moron. I read stuff, and it just slides right out of my head. I plant on the blind faith approach. I do nothing for weeks and then go out with a scythe and emerge with crazy eyes, covered with mud and blood. Fortunately my herb garden has proved impossible to kill - although I really only use dill, basil and oregano and the other ten things are just for show.

  6. @Mom of the Perpetually Grounded Pics to come! After the shitty new subdivision soil (I dug up a can of cigarette butts!) I'm hoping everything survives!

  7. @Capital Mom Just get out there and do it! Steal some cuttings from friends and plant them in the fall. If they come up in the spring then you're good to go!

  9. @allison -Snort- gawd you make me laugh! You should just do a blog post of comments you've left on other people's blogs. Sometimes I read blogs you read just so I can see what you've said! Also of course you use cilantro too, everyone uses cilantro!

  10. I have zero desire or passion for gardening. I pay others to do these things for me. I don't mind being dirty, that's not it. Just can't grow anything to save my life.

  11. I love to garden.

My kids scream then run like I'm nutz (which I am)but I have GOT to get things done.

I must work fast, and yes, that means yanking any able bodied boy walking past by the neck and holding him down in the dirt to dig alongside me.

Summer is fleeting here...we MUST act quickly.

    Someday, someday...they'll understand.

Probably not, but, still...I gotta try.

  12. I came back to get Nic's blog URL. Now I'm blushing and giggling. I love cilantro but can you actually grow it? Every time I plant it, it grows for three days and then goes to seed. So naturally every time I need it I buy a whole bunch from the grocery store, use two tablespoons and let the rest get all slimy. Delicious AND economical.
